Head wrestling coach - Andrew Pickett
Andrew Pickett is a mathematics teacher and head wrestling coach at North Salem High School. He also donates his time to coach a youth wrestling mat club (Capital City Mat Club). The 2017-2018 season will be his 9th as the head coach of the North Salem wrestling program. Before that, he was an assistant wrestling coach at North and McKay High Schools for 6 years. He was mentored by the great Rick Herrin (who coached at McKay for over 20 years). Over the past 15 years, Andrew Pickett has coached 10 regional champions, 8 state finalists, 2 state champions, 5 national qualifiers, 5 national placers, and 1 national champion. He was also voted Greater Valley Conference (GVC) Coach of the Year on two separate occasions. In the 2015-2016 season, coach Pickett led the North Salem Vikings to a 2nd place finish in the GVC tournament, the highest finish in North Salem history. In 2016-2017, the Vikings fielded a very small team (only entering 18 wrestlers out of a possible 28 slots) at the Regional Tournament, but still managed to send five wrestlers to the finals and placed 3rd as a team. Sending only five wrestlers to the OSAA state tournament, North Salem battled their way to a 10th place team finish (Senior Brandon Quezada won bronze in the 113-pound division and Sophomore Ian Carlos brought home a gold medal in the 145-pound weight class)
Coach Pickett married the love of his life, Enjoli Pickett and they now have two beautiful children together, Soraya and Colton. When he is not in the wrestling room, he is enjoying time with them out on the family farm.
Coach Pickett’s goal in life is to have a positive impact on society through the development of youth. Teaching and coaching give him a platform to do exactly this. He has a passion for working with high school students, youth wrestlers, and their parents. After great finished the past few seasons, Coach Pickett is excited for the 2017-2018 wrestling season. North Salem is looking to improve on last year’s finish by setting some lofty goals for the upcoming season.
